Why Your Origin Story Matters
Whenever I meet a business owner, I am always fascinated to hear how passionate they are and the unique take they have on their industry. That’s why I love putting them in front of a camera and interviewing them for those authentic stories that only come out if you let them talk long enough.
Normally we try to present ourselves and our businesses as this corporate monolith with the intention of being professional, but in doing so we don’t really connect with anyone other than the ai bot crawling the website.
Everyone has an origin story, but most brands tell them like a boring history lesson. If yours doesn’t help you land clients, it’s just noise. You need to share your distinct, unapologetic reason for existing. Your origin story isn't just a record of how you started. It’s the emotional connection that turns a one-off client into a lifelong partner that wants you to succeed.
Find Your "Why"
Every brand needs an anchor. Look at Airbnb: they weren't trying to build a multi-billion dollar empire on day one. The founders just needed to pay rent and realized they could lease air mattresses in their apartment. That story of "belonging anywhere" resonated because it was human and answered a simple need.
Identify the original problem you set out to solve and the "necessity" that drove the founding of the company. What impact do you want to have on your customers and the world? This purpose guides every decision from product design to environmental activism. When you share your passion and purpose, you stop being just another service provider.
By grounding your business in an authentic story, you occupy a space in your client's mind that’s protected by its own truth. It turns your audience into advocates. When you stop "marketing" and start sharing your story, buyers amplify your message on your behalf.
Seeing the Story in Action
This structure is designed to peel back the "corporate monolith" layer and get to the authentic, human spark that drives the founder. By following these steps, you’ll be able to structure your interview questions to get the raw, compelling material you need for a great founder story.
1. Uncovering the Origin
Don't ask about the business plan. Ask about the mess they had to solve.
What was the specific, frustrating problem you were dealing with before this company existed?
Most people try to make their origin story look perfect. What was the 'ugly' reality or the moment of necessity that actually forced you to start?
If this business vanished tomorrow, what is the one thing that would be missing from the world?
2. The Human Anchor
Move beyond features. Find the emotional driver.
If you stripped away the revenue and the growth metrics, what is the single thing you’re fighting for every single day?
When you’re stuck or tired, what’s the one reason you keep showing up to this specific industry?
Airbnb started just to pay rent. The need was simple and human. What was your 'air mattress' moment? The simple, human problem you were trying to solve?
3. Deeply Connect with Them
What is the moment in the client journey where you stop being 'just another vendor' and start being a partner?
When a client tells you why they chose you over someone cheaper or bigger, what is the specific emotional reason they give you?
If your clients could only remember one thing about working with you, what do you want that feeling to be?
4. Your Future Vision
Turn the story into advocacy.
How does sharing your story change the type of client who wants to work with you?
If you could convince every person in your industry to change one thing about how they treat their customers, what would it be?
Pro Tip
When the founder starts giving you "corporate speak," stop them. Say: "That’s the PR answer. Let’s talk about the real one. If we were sitting at a bar, how would you explain why this business matters to someone who has no idea what you do?"
Ultimately, the most powerful stories aren't written by copywriters. They're spoken by founders. But getting that gold out of a founder's head requires a guided effort. Business owners are often too close to the their product to see the threads of the story which connects it all. That's where we come in. We don't just hit record; we structure the questions, strip away the corporate polish, and pull out the raw, unfiltered truth that turns you into a compelling brand leader.
