Hallstatt and Obertraun
For a break from the city, we headed to the alpine towns of Obertraun and the 7000 year old town of Hallstatt. The town has been in existence even before Rome and has been declared a UNESCO world heritage site, so what you see has remained authentic to the way it looked for many years.
The beautiful Hallstattersee
Our hotel and a view of the surrounding mountains
The entire village had the amazing smell of log fires and pine trees.
We took a cable car up the mountain to view the town from high above
Ice Caves up in the mountains
Freezing water dripping down
Taking a boat over to Hallstatt
Bone House at the church
Due to the strategic position of the town and its inaccessibility, burial space has run out very early in the town's history. The people then decided on a more efficient way of saving space and paying respect by Painting and stacking the bones in what is now known as the Beinhaus (or Bone House)

Pear trees climbing up to greet the windows. Breakfast on the go.
