Learning French

As long as I can remember, I have always wanted to learn French. After travelling to Europe my feet have started itching to go back again. This time to Belgium & Luxembourg. In these two countries French is one of the official languages, so this year, as a new year's resolution, I decided to take the plunge and dive into it headfirst by signing up for the Beginners level 1 course at the Alliance Française

The classes can be taken in different timeslots and I chose the 3 hour Saturday morning slots. With the campus being located in the heart of the city centre, I made a rule to start the early mornings with some pain au chocolat and coffee from Jason Bakery (which is just around the corner). With breakfast in hand, I would nestle into the comfy leather sofa's at the Alliance and catch up with classmates as they come in.

The teacher, Florimond, is very helpful, and with the right amount of patience that is needed. At first, when I heard that the classes are given mainly in French, I thought the classes would fly right over my head. But with the help of the books and repetition, one quickly picks up a few phrases and before you know it, it all makes sense.

After the first 4 month course, I could greet people in French, give directions, count to a million and talk about my job and my hobbies, among other things. I am amazed at how quickly we could all learn so much.

The classes were informal and this meant that I made some friends who I am excited to join in the next level course that starts in 2 months.

If you want to find out more about the courses on offer, check out the Alliance Française website. You can also have a look at their blog or Facebook page.

Mon professeur, Florimond. Il est congolais mais il semble très français dans cette écharpe.
